I get my own crafting room!

YAY! I don't get to start doing things until the boys roommate moves out (another yay), but I am SO excited! I need ideas. This is the layout of the room:

Ooh, this is going to be so much fun! The closet doors are removable so I can use that as storage space.

Purl Necklace

Ok, not really... but someone said that they don't know how to do the purl stitch, so yay for my first stitch tutorial (with pictures, FANCY!).

How to Purl

Why would you want to purl? You're perfectly happy with the knit stitch, thank you very much!
Well, if you want to be able to do stockinette stitch without working in the round, or be able to do ribbing for hats or sweaters you're going to need to learn to purl. I'm not a fan of purling, but once you get the hang of it it's relatively painless.

Step 1: Bring the yarn to the front of your needle, just before the stitch you are going to be purling.
Step 2: stick your needle in to the FRONT of the stitch to be purled, keeping your working yarn in the front and to the right of your stitch.
Step 3: Take your yarn and bring it around the stitch, so that it is at the back of your right hand needle.

Step 4: Pull the working yarn through the stitch. I've done 2 pictures as the first one is a little hard to see. (It's pretty difficult to take pictures with needles in your hands!)

How the stitch should look once you've pulled the yarn through, before dropping it off onto the right side needle:

Voila! You've done your purl stitch! It gets easier with practice, I promise. Here is a purl stitch next to 4 knit stitches. (From left to right: Purl, Knit, Knit, Knit, Knit)

Hope that is helpful and clear!

The pattern I'm working on right now is the one I published last year, Hat with Cables

My name is Valarie, and I'm a yarnaholic.

Laura posted a great entry over at The Knew Knitter. I love it because of all the knitting info you now get to know about me!

What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely not like?
I like "soft" yarns. I can't handle anything scratchy or harsh- my hands really don't like it and I end up unlikely to finish the project. I'm a big fan of wool blends.

What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
Oh man, they end up everywhere! I have a folder that I keep them in that I got in Joann Fabric. (It's like a zip up binder)

How long have you been knitting? How did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I have been knitting for about a year now. I was taught by a good friend. I tried to teach myself once long ago from a book and it didn't click for me. I'm not sure what my skill level would be considered, maybe beginning intermediate lol.

What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I love to bake! I would love to learn to sew. I want to get a spinning wheel very badly, and I have a friend that said they would show me the ropes. Just have to drop the $$ first.

What’s your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can’t stand?
Not a huge fan of orange. I love blues and pinks.

Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
I am a huge fan of scarfs. I have tons of pashmina scarfs in a plethora of colors :). Hats not as much, although I do wear them. I don't like mittens very much. I've not worn a poncho.

What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
I love actually finishing projects, so the smaller things. I've made a lot of hats!

What are you knitting right now?
I have so many projects on needles it's ridiculous!

Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
I love them :)

Do you prefer straight or circular needles?
It depends on what I'm knitting. I like straights a lot.

Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
I wish!

How old is your oldest UFO?
Probably about 4 months.

Is there anything that you collect?
Penguins. It's slightly unhealthy.

Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
There are so many things on my wish list- I may have to dedicate a post to that (or do installments lol). I have no subscriptions to any knitting magazines.

Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn?
I really want to learn color work, but I get frustrated easily with my lack of dexterity.

Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
I have huge feet! I have yet to make a sock.

Are you on Ravelry? If so, what’s your ID?
Yes I am! Walelia2 on ravelry.

Happy knitting!
